GENRE RESEARCH: DRAMA?!?!

Yooo, what up fam, just letting you guys know right now... I LOVE DRAMA. It is always surprising when the plot twist would happen or when the characters go through an episode that leaves us with that indescribable feeling of  "WOW" Knowing so much about it drama, I thought it would only be right to talk about it in today's blog, so let's dive straight into it.

The drama genre is as popular as ever. It's such an influential genre that most famous directors have dipped their toes into the world of drama. Examples of these directors include Woody Allen, Damien Chazelle, and Juan Antonio Bayona. I've never talked about what drama is, so the genre mostly relies on the detailed development of realistic characters that deal with the emotional issues people often experience in real life. Themes of drug addiction, alcoholism, infidelity, moral issues, sexuality, class differences, poverty, and racial issues are all seen in these films. These themes are key to the film, as they usually pit the characters against the society and themselves that are the plot of the film. Additionally, drama is also one of the broadest genres in the film industry, and these subgenres include romantic dramas, sports movies, dramas, and crime. The target audience for these films is often the young to middle-aged people to whom they are marketed. These plays span a range of ages from 13 to 15 and are often script-heavy, so they are aimed at people in their 20s or 30s and up. A solid example of a cutting-edge adapted film that has grossed over $263 million at the box office is Bong Joon-Ho's "Parasite," which won multiple awards and managed to bring people of all ages together to enjoy his masterpiece.

In most drama films, the main characters often belong to one character or a group of two characters, regardless of gender. Drama genre plots range from romance to social inequality as mentioned above, but there are other themes as well. Regardless of the plot, the realistic scenarios generated are constant in these films. The plot and characters, regardless of whether the world or characters are fictional, take what is happening around them as possible situations that determine their actions. Luke Skywalker wielding a lightsaber, gives a threatening feeling to the audience, we do not sit and just take in his actions.

It seems that the production of drama also uses a certain technique. All of these film strategies benefit from using dialogue as the focus of the film. In many drama movies, the driving points aren't fast-paced, and the dialogue dictates what happens in the scene, and the film changes pace accordingly. The recently released movie After That is a good example. The scene is intimate because both of them are one and you can see their intentions.

Although these scenes are incredible examples of these certain techniques, these famous techniques would not be used if it wasn't for how these films are marketed. Usually, the marketing campaigns often consist of propaganda or trailers, one can watch these before the movie is released to get a headstart on what you're going to be watching soon. Another form of marketing is posters, every time people go to a movie theater, the first thing they want to see are the new movie posters, which often include the main characters and their relationships. In the picture below we can see the two main characters of the movie 'call me by your name", Timothee Chalamett (Elio) and Armi Hammer (Oliver) are very close and this conveys the relationship between both characters in the movie.

THE UPSIDE

The upside is a 2017 comedy/drama film directed by Neil Burger. The film tells the story of a paralyzed, white, wealthy man who found nothing but great friendships in moving on with his life. An African-American with a life-changing criminal record. White "Philip" hires "Dell" to look after him and they both try to live life to the fullest. Despite coming from two separate worlds, an unlikely relationship begins to blossom as Del and Philip rediscover the joys of life. The characters in this film are very real, two people living freely together and enjoying each other's company while learning how to live. As you can see, the film contains real-life issues that not everyone will go through, and the audience will be treated to a good-hearted filmmaker who is willing to help an African-American man who wants his family back.
